In July I (Kath) will be taking part in the 13 mile midnight walk for St. Luke's. This year I will be walking with Mat's mum Sue, his sister Helen and our niece Carla who is just 11. We all share the aim of raising as much as we can for St Luke's in memory of Mat. St Luke's were a huge support to us throughout much of Mat's illness.
Mat passed away in August 2016, aged just 42, after a 20 month battle with an aggressive brain tumour. He was supported by St Luke's for 14 of those incredibly hard months. Their support helped Mat deal emotionally with the enormity of his diagnosis, practically they helped adapt our home so that Mat could stay there for as long as possible and in the final stages of his illness they provided care that kept him as pain free and as comfortable as possible.
As well as looking after Mat's many needs, they also tried hard to create memories with Mat, myself and the boys. The boys will always have those memories (photographs) to treasure.
The services provided by St Luke's are absolutely essential to support patients and their families through terminal illness. They rely heavily on charity donations as only a small percentage of their funds are received from the NHS. I want to raise as much as possible in Mat's name, to help them to continue to provide the amazing service that they do and as a thank you for all that they did for us.
